What I discovered.

My brief time in Calgary. Went to golf town with my dad. He’s looking to pick up a new set of irons.

We had that experience. Some thoughts there.

But then on the way out we stopped at the putting green. I grabbed a wedge. And immediately saw something glorious. It looked like a Japanese chefs knife. So sharp on the ground. I have access to the entire ball. Nestle it settle it down. And of course. The shoulder motion. Voila. Just effortlessly swings down and through. Quiet hands no problem. Confident. Ease. And of course. First shot calibrate. And then boom. Makes one rolls right in perfectly. Walk over and shoot a shot going back different pin. Boom rolls right in perfectly.

I was thinking about margin for error. Shooting without needing to carry and rolling it into a cup that must be like 2 or three times larger than the demon target I’m aiming at each day right now.

I also see that there’s a full face groove on it. Which. That’s interesting. I feel like maybe I should roll with that. I’m not exactly hitting it too far outside. But maybe there’s something there. Even more range of shotmaking if I’ve got that.

Short answer: your PVC pipe is way smaller than a real hole.

Assuming your pipe is 2” diameter and a regulation cup is 4.25” diameter:

Diameter comparison Golf hole: 4.25” PVC pipe: 2” The real hole is about 2.1× wider than your pipe. Area (the “size of the target” you can hit) Area of pipe opening: π × (1”)² ≈ 3.14 in² Area of golf hole: π × (2.125”)² ≈ 14.19 in² The golf hole is about 4.5× bigger in area than your PVC pipe. Your pipe is only about 22% the area of a real hole.

So:

👉 You’re practicing on a target that’s roughly 4½ times smaller than an actual golf hole in terms of area.

Which is a sick flex, by the way. If you can get deadly with that, a real cup is going to feel like a manhole cover.

So part of the idea. Because of how easy I hot those shots into a regulation hole. Was to somehow have more of those checkpoints on real golf. I’m kind of stuck in winter. So. Scaling up and solving this target. I think just focused on skill doing that. And whenever I get the opportunities to play. I’ll experience the gains.

The other thing I noticed. Was the need to work on my long irons. Just a simple drill tho. Gravity. But to have somewhere to do that.

I was thinking the backyard somewhere. Or build myself some kind of netting Im the small space in my garage.
